This website is a collection of information we've gathered about our VW1600E, and VW Type 3s in general. We hope you find it useful.
We don't claim to be experts on anything: this is simply stuff we've found out the hard way, or been told about. We do a lot of DIY spannering on our vehicles and just take photos of the interesting or broken bits. If anything is wrong then please let us know.
What you won't find here is much general VW or Type 3 stuff. There are more than enough websites covering this already. Here are some links to a few of the more relevant ones.
If you would like us to post your 1600E related stuff then feel free to contact the webmaster.
The website was written by hand using Notepad and EVRsoft 1stPage2000. We chose 1stPage2000 because it is free, and works really well, but doesn't generate reams of automatic code. All the graphics, icons and photographs are our own work unless stated otherwise, or it is totally obvious (e.g. the logos for other websites). The VW1600E logo was cunningly and laboriously derived from a photograph of the badge on the boot lid of our car.
We live in Southampton. If you don't know where that is, its a city on the South coast of England. It is one of the largest and most important ports in the country; and is also famous for being the home of the SS Titanic, Supermarine Spitfire, the Ford Transit, and Ordnance Survey.
Matthew is a Software Engineer who works on
Digital TV Broadcast equipment.

Edward is a little boy who likes playing in the fastback.
| 1988 | 1975 Viper Green 1600 FI Super beetle with steel sunroof (US Model) |
| 1989 - 1997? | 1975 1200 Beetle which got lowered, dechromed and all that. May have been Pacific blue but I'm not sure. It ended up painted a Ford light blue which was a reasonable match. |
| 1991? | 1972 Black 1302. I put the 1200 engine in my beetle for 3 days until it dropped #3 exhaust valve at 65MPH on the A34. Car was previously imported from Germany. |
| 199? - 199? | 1984? Peugeot 205 GR |
| 199? - 199? | 1987 Tornado Red MkII Golf GTi (8V). |
| 199? - 199? | 1973 1700 Automatic Westfalia Camper (never really got it on the road). |
| 2001? - present | 1973 Iberian red 1600E Fastback. |
| 2002 | 1972 Texas yellow 1600 Fastback parts car. Everything that could be removed was, and is in the garage in boxes. The body shell was cut up and taken to the tip in sections, in the back of the Golf. |
| 2002 - present | 1996 Silver Passat Estate 2.0CL. (Its still a variant, you know, just not a T3!). |
We also like bikes. Bikes are fun. They are much faster than cars, and much easier to work on. Living in the UK you need a bike just to stay sane in the face of all the queueing traffic everywhere. We both have full bike licences and have been riding for 10+ years. Some of the bikes we've had are:
| 199? - 199? | 197? Yamaha RS100 ? |
| 199? - 199? | 198? Kawasaki Z250A2. |
| 199? - 199? | 198? Honda CX500 |
| 199? - 199? | 1987? Suzuki GSX550ES. |
| 199? - 199? | 1988 Honda VFR400R (NC30) (Grey Import) |
| 199? - 200? | 1991 Yamaha FJ1200. |
| 199? - present | 1977? Honda CB200. In storage awaiting restoration. |
| 200? - present | 1991 Honda VFR400R (NC30). (Grey import) |
Very work in progress.
